MP3: MPEG Layer 3 and MP2: MPEG 2 |
MPEG: Motion Picture Experts Group Description: MPEG Layer 3 is an 'lossy' audio compression format used mainly for compressing music. 'Lossy' means that when the audio is compressed, it loses some of it's original data. It can reduce the size of an audio file to approximately 1/11th of it's original size without noticable loss of quality. Player: Winamp is the most popular of MP3 players. It sports a playlist, customizable interface, visual effects, support for playing all types of media, and many more features: http://www.winamp.com More players can be found at http://www.mp3.com/software/ Official site: http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/mp3.html More information: http://www.mp3.com |
VQF: TwinVQ Format |
TwinVQ: Twin Vector Quantization Description: VQF is a format similar to MPEG layer 3 developed by the NTT Human Interface Research Institute. Compressing with TwinVQ can reduce the size of an audio file to approximately 1/20th of it's original size without noticable loss of quality. It's drawback is that it heavier on the processor. This is intentional, however, as VQFs are designed to take advantage of the computing abilities of today's processors. Player: Using a plugin, VQFs can be played using Winamp as well. More players and the VQF plugin can be found at http://www.vqf.com/software.php3 Official site: http://www.yamaha-xg.com/english/xg/SoundVQ/index.html More information: http://www.vqf.com |
